Like You

As I've mentioned before, my daughter has a way of making me love myself more--even the parts of myself I've previously spurned as unattractive, or at the very least, unfortunate. Wrinkles, cellulite, and general s-a-g-g-i-n-g and such aren't easy, particularly as one closes in on the big 4-0. But what make her observations so lovely is their genuine lack of judgement. Like today:

"Momma, when I grow up, I'm gonna have a big, big butt like you."

And I loved it. Because instead of thinking, "God, my butt is BIG," I was reminded that such a trait, in Celie's eyes, represents the kind of independence she strives for. With a big butt, you get to sit on the real potty, without fear of falling in; with a big butt, your jeans have larger, deeper pockets, and therefore able to hold more treasure.

I love my girl. And today, finally, my big butt, too.
