Election Day

A wonderful Tuesday that began by standing in line--something I've never had to do before at the polls and something I actually found quite affirming, seeing so many people participate. I chatted with my new neighbors, watched Celie grab for more "I Voted" stickers than one is usually allowed, and generally sensed an amazing mix of energy and hopefulness. While I've always understood voting as a priviledge intellectually, today I felt it so for the first time emotionally. Perhaps its my age, or having a child, or realizing that things, in fact, can get worse. It could be the times, or the stakes, or finally believing that change it possible. Either way, as Tom Brokaw said this evening, "the age of apathy is over." Finally.
